Easter on the Greek island of Kalymnos is marked by distinctive and vibrant traditions that reflect the island’s rich cultural heritage. One of the most notable customs is the use of dynamite and fireworks to celebrate the resurrection of Christ. At midnight on Holy Saturday, locals engage in “dynamite throwing,” a practice believed to have roots in the island’s resistance during the Italian occupation in the early 20th century. This explosive display symbolizes defiance and resilience, with fireworks illuminating the slopes of Saint Savvas and Saint Stefanos.
In addition to these fiery celebrations, Kalymnos observes other Easter customs. On Lazarus Saturday, women bake “lazarakia,” man-shaped cookies representing the resurrected Lazarus. Easter Sunday features communal feasts in the main square of Kalymnos Town, showcasing traditional dishes like “mououri,” a stuffed lamb dish baked in wood-fired ovens.
These traditions, encompassing both solemn rituals and exuberant festivities, offer a unique and immersive experience for those visiting Kalymnos during the Easter period.
